Obituary for Sue Anne Costello

Sue Anne Costello (born Sue Anne Richards and known to her friends and family as Susie), 68, of Portland, MI, passed away on October 20, 2026. She was born on May 10, 1958, in Mt. Pleasant, MI to Laurence and Mary Richards.
Sue and her husband Mike were high school sweethearts at Chippewa Hills High School. They married on February 19, 1977, and in 1979 they moved to the Lansing area, where they made their home ever since.
Throughout her life, Sue impacted so many people most of the time doing so from behind the scenes. Sue worked at the Portland McDonald’s for over twenty years. For six years she lovingly served as the PHS marching band seamstress. From the teenagers that worked with her at McDonald’s and those in the marching band, she was a mom through and through.
Sue was also the creative genius behind the Skeletons of Bridge Street, the Halloween display that became a community favorite, and proof that you can become a local celebrity without anyone ever seeing your face, only your bones.
She loved music and art of all kinds, and was an adept seamstress and baker. Above all, Sue will be remembered for her bright smile and her constant willingness to lend a hand.
Sue was preceded in death by her father, Laurence Richards. She is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Michael; her mother, Mary Richards; her sisters, Nancy Patterson and Patty Young; her sons, Brett, Blake, and Eric (Hilary); and her grandchildren, Elliot, Violet, and Emmet.
Cremation has taken place, and there will be no public funeral service. Online condolences may be made at www.lehmanfuneralhomes.com.
