Ruth Ann “Ruthie” (Lanning) Gillis, 84, of Portland, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of her family, on July 4, 2026.
Born on July 31, 1941, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Marland and Anna Lanning, Ruthie graduated from Rockford High School. She dedicated her life to serving her family, friends, and community.
On June 28, 1984, she married John “Jack” Gillis, and together they shared more than 42 years of love, laughter, companionship, and unwavering devotion.
Throughout her life, Ruthie embraced many opportunities to serve others. Alongside Jack, she proudly managed Edgemont Apartments for several years before becoming Executive Director of the Portland Area Service Group, where she served until her retirement on February 15, 2019. Earlier in life, she also worked as a bartender and server and operated a food truck—roles perfectly suited to someone who never met a stranger. Jack and Ruthie were long-time attendees of the First Congregational Church of Portland.
Known for her warm smile, quick wit, and ability to make friends wherever she went, Ruthie enjoyed playing Euchre, Scrabble, and shuffleboard and treasured time spent with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her son, Christopher Koon; her parents, Marland and Anna Lanning; and her brothers, Orville Lanning and Melvin Lanning.
She is survived by her beloved husband, John “Jack” Gillis; sons Chad (LeeAnne) Koon and Curt (Jacquie) Koon; Denny (Deb) Gillis and Kelle Gillis; brother Lavern “Vern” (Lenora) Lanning; grandchildren Olivia, Jessica, David, and Emily; an abundance of great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, extended family, and many dear friends.
The Funeral Service will be officiated by Rev. Dr. Marilyn V. Danielson at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2026 at the Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge Street, Portland. Visitation will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral chapel. A luncheon will follow the service at the Portland VFW Post 4090.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Lehman Funeral Homes. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to McLaren Hospice Care.
