Obituary for Laura Ellen Carpenter

Laura Ellen Carpenter, 56, peacefully passed away on July 18, 2026, surrounded by family.

Born May 5, 1970, Laura battled with the challenges brought by Down Syndrome. She successfully graduated from Freedom Acres through Ionia School District, in Michigan, and achieved many life skills that the world said she could not.

Laura enjoyed music, Pepsi, ice cream and shakes, and loved golf cart rides with her parents. She was a landlubber, averse to any activities involving water. Laura resided at Chosen Vision in Grand Ledge for the past 18 years, where she enjoyed many activities and outings.

Laura was a quiet presence in the family house, often happily sitting in her chair with her magazine. She taught us unconditional love, and she will be deeply missed.

Laura is survived by her parents, Dale and Marcia Carpenter, and sisters Ann Selleck (Bill) and Karen Carpenter-Shoals (Scott). Also surviving her are nephews, William Selleck, Sam Selleck (fiancée Dakota Koenigsknecht), and Brendan Shoals. Aunt Margaret Yock and extended family are also left to mourn.

A funeral service honoring Laura will be held Friday, July 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lehman Funeral Home in Portland, Michigan. Visitation will be one hour before the service (10:00 a.m.). Your thoughts and prayers are deeply appreciated; the family requests no flowers or memorial donations.
