Corporal Daniel Robert Swift Lathers, 39, of Kyle, Texas, passed away on Monday, September 21st, 2026, following a decade long battle with a traumatic brain injury sustained while serving in the United States Marine Corps.

Dan was born on February 3rd, 1987 in Traverse City, Michigan. He graduated from Portland High School in 2005, and went on to earn Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees at Texas State University.

Dan enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 2005. He served with the 3rd Battalion, 5th Regiment, known as “Darkhorse”, and completed multiple combat deployments in the Iraqi War. In 2013, Dan was medically retired from the Marine Corps.

Dan married Renée (Whitfield) Lathers on July 14th, 2007. They met while he was stationed at Camp Pendleton in San Clemente, California, and were married for 19 years. Dan and Renée had two beautiful children, Hadley and Carson Lathers.

Following his retirement, Dan continued his commitment to service by transitioning into public advocacy, working on behalf of veterans. He served as a veteran service officer, advocating for homeless and disabled veterans. At the time of his death, Dan was employed in the Audit and Assurance Department of the Deloitte Corporation, assisting veterans with disability claims.

As a result of his military service, Dan was the recipient of a Texas home given to him in 2017 by Homes for Heroes, an organization that provides free homes to disabled military veterans. A lifetime Dodger fan, Dan was honored at a Los Angeles Dodgers baseball game as the Military Hero of the Game in July 2026.

In his free time, Dan was a tenacious marathon runner. At the time of his death, he was training for his second completion of the U.S. Marine Corps Marathon in Washington D.C., which raises money and awareness for veteran mental health and suicide prevention. He also loved adventure, laughing, and roller coasters.

He is survived by his wife, Renée (Whitfield) Lathers, daughter Hadley Lathers, son Carson Lathers; his parents, Robert Lathers and Krista Hausermann, formerly of Portland, MI; his sister, Teaghan Lathers, of Ann Arbor, MI; his in-laws, Bruce and Lisa Whitfield and family; his best friend for life, Brandon Leyrer; many aunts, uncles, and cousins, his dogs, Lacey and Dodger, and his cat, Ollie.

Funeral services will be held with full military honors in Austin, Texas. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Semper Fi Fund.
