Portland High School Drama is proud to announce its upcoming production of Les Misérables: School Edition, the beloved musical by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, based on the novel by Victor Hugo. Performances will take place on March 12th-15th at PHS Auditorium.
Set in 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells the sweeping story of Jean Valjean, a man imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread who spends his life seeking redemption after breaking parole. Pursued relentlessly by Inspector Javert, Valjean rebuilds his life while caring for Cosette, daughter of the struggling factory worker Fantine. As France stands on the brink of revolution, a group of passionate students rises to fight for justice at the barricades, discovering courage, sacrifice, and the enduring power of hope.
With over 40 students involved, this production showcases the extraordinary talents of Portland High School’s performers, musicians, and technical crew. The School Edition has been specially adapted for high school performers while preserving the emotional depth and musical power that have made Les Misérables one of the most celebrated musicals in theatrical history.
“This story continues to resonate because it asks timeless questions about mercy, justice, and what we owe to one another,” said Chandra Polasek, director of the production. “Our students have embraced not only the music and drama, but also the deeper themes of compassion, sacrifice, and social responsibility. It’s an impactful story about the responsibilities we share as a society - the kids feel that and truly commit to carrying that message.”
Performances will be held at Portland High School on March 12th, 13th, and 14th at 7 pm, and March 15th at 2pm. Tickets are available online and at the door.
