Lady Raiders top Williamston in early season showdown


On Friday night, the Portland High School girls basketball team traveled to Williamston to face the Hornets. Williamston is the first of several strong teams that the Portland squad will face this season. Both Portland and Williamston are in contention for their respective conference titles.


The contest proved to be a defensive showcase from start to finish. Neither team was able to pass or shoot without be contested.


Despite trailing at the end of the first 10-9, the Lady Raiders were able to shut the Hornet offense down in the second quarter of play to take a lead of 16-10 at the half.


Portland would out score Williamston 13-6 in the third, and despite the Hornets outscoring the Raiders 8-7 in the final quarter, Portland was able to secure a 36-24 victory.


Williamston was led offensively by sophomores Clair Casey with 10 points, and Reese Gaytan with six points.


Portland seniors Breckyn Werner and Ashley Bower would lead the offense with nine points each, while senior Alivia Densmore would add seven points.

1st – 2nd – 3rd – 4th – Final

Portland 9 – 7 – 13 – 7 – 36

Williamston 10 – 0 – 6 – 8 – 24


The Lady Raiders improve to 2-0 on the season. Their next contest is Friday, December 10th, when they host Charlotte for their first CAAC White game of the year. Charlotte is currently 1-0 after defeating Lansing Eastern 53-13 in their opener.
