Lady Raiders fall to GR West Catholic in Regionals

The Portland High School girls basketball team traveled to Comstock Park on Tuesday night to face Grand Rapids West Catholic in the regional semi-finals.


The powerful West Catholic squad was too much for the Raiders to handle, and West Catholic earned a 52-39 win to advance.


West Catholic was led offensively by sophomore guard Elisha Dykstra with 14 points, and senior guard Cadence Dykstra with 12 points.


Portland was led by junior guard Malia Thelen with 14 points, sophomore forward Erica Russman with nine points, freshman guard Lilly Thelen with seven points, and junior forward Alexa Weber with six points.


Scoring by quarter:

1st – 2nd – 3rd – 4th – Final

Portland 2 – 19 – 15 – 3 – 39

GRWC 14 – 14 – 21 – 3 – 52


The Portland season ended with an overall record of 15-9. They finished second place in the CAAC White with a conference record of 6-2.


West Catholic would move on to face Grand Rapids Christian in the regional finals on Thursday night. West Catholic would win that contest 53-45 in overtime, earning the Regional Champion title. The will face Holland Christian in the state quarter-finals.
