On Wednesday, April 23, 2025 Portland’s Haden Getchell was honored by Hope College Department of Economics and Business with the Steve M. Kupres Business Leadership Award.
According to professor and award presenter, Dr. Matthew Rodgers, this award is presented to Junior Business students “who most clearly exemplify the characteristics of: Integrity, Commitment, Personal Development, Stewardship, and Teamwork.”
As a 2022 graduate of Portland High School, Getchell credits his teachers and coaches in Portland, along with continued teaching and mentorship at Hope College, for instilling these characteristics. Getchell was actively involved at PHS in activities and sports: YAC, NHS, football (QB), golf, basketball, soccer, and wrestling. He continues his academic success with Dean’s List honors at Hope.
Haden credits, “I am humbled by this honor because I am surrounded by the smartest people. I work hard, but it doesn’t always come naturally for me. So, I appreciate all the help from my professors and peers, and the support from my family. I still use many of the teamwork skills I learned at PHS and from my coaches. And Hope is a great place to build on those.”
Getchell will spend a May term in Alaska this spring, then work a summer internship in Indianapolis before entering his senior year at Hope next fall.
