First Baptist Church
First Baptist Church of Portland has been serving the community of Portland for over 180 years, making it one of the oldest congregations in Portland.
Founded in the year 1840, it is presently led by Senior Pastor Gary Coleman. Pastor Coleman is a graduate of Cornerstone Seminary in Grand Rapids.
“We are a congregation that uses the Word of God, that loves learning good things from scripture, and that practices the principles of the Word of God,” said Pastor Coleman.
Prior to the pandemic, First Baptist’s congregation numbered about 100 people.
“Attendance is somewhat down due to Covid-19, but we are slowly building it back,” said the pastor.
First Baptist is involved in many good things.
“We run the Awana program on Wednesday evening, which introduces children to God and to the Word of God,” said the pastor. “We also have bible studies for adults, a youth group, and worship on Sunday morning and on Sunday evening,”
Pastor Coleman finds his ministry to be very gratifying.
“I enjoy seeing people’s lives change for the better, and in seeing their growth in Jesus Christ,” said the pastor. “As part of my ministry, I am in a special position. I have the privilege to be part of the joys and sorrows of my congregation. I am there for my people when a child is born and when their loved ones are laid to rest. It’s a special privilege to be part of people’s lives in this way,” he said.
Pastor Coleman wants everyone to know that they may visit First Baptist Church for services and for bible studies.
“All people are welcome at out church,” he said. “We will welcome them with love.”
