Featured Business: Prime Contracting
Corey Stiles is the proud owner of Prime Contracting, a service which specializes in asbestos abatement, mold remediation, and selective demolition.
“Asbestos is a cancer-causing material,” said Corey. “When breathed, it is a hazard to one’s body. It was used for building insulation and was banned in 1978 but it continued to be sold until approximately 1986. It is found in many homes and in many commercial buildings.”
Corey explained his process for asbestos removal.
“Typically, when we remove asbestos from a building, we set up a full containment; then we utilize air machines that filter the air and that suck out the air from the building. We then wet down everything with water and detergent and we remove the insulation and whatever else that contains asbestos.”
Corey has been involved is this venture for twenty-two years. A lifelong resident of Portland, he employs five people. “I find this work meaningful because it contributes to better health for my customers,” he said. “My customers have been very happy with our work. They understand that this service will help them and their families to avoid health problems.”
Corey explained that there are at present very strict laws that prohibit the use of asbestos in the construction of buildings. A homeowner with the issue may legally remove asbestos from his home himself, but Corey does not recommend this.
“Most people do not have access to proper equipment that will allow them to do it safely and correctly,” he said.
Corey feels that his work makes an important contribution to the welfare of the community. “I find great satisfaction in what I do,” he said. “I know that it helps people to avoid health problems. I am grateful for the opportunity to help people in this manner.”
