Electric Cooperative Builds Transmission Facility

Jordan D. Smith

Construction is underway on Grand River Ave. west of the TriCounty Homeworks headquarters.  According to Charly Markwart, communications manager for the electric cooperative, the construction is part of a Wolverine Power Cooperative electric transmission site.  The location of the facility is coincidental according to Markwart.  The new facility does not belong to TriCounty, but is being built adjacent to it.

Wolverine Power is the power supplier for many electric cooperatives throughout the state including TriCounty Homeworks.  Markwart says the aim of the project is to increase electric reliability.  Upgrading transmission line infrastructure is a part of the long term goal of the cooperative to, “...increase capacity, resilience, and reliability of Michigan’s bulk electric transmission system…”

The infrastructure updates are part of long-range improvements planned and budgeted by Wolverine Power.  While it will improve electric service reliability for cooperative members, it  is not set to affect electric rates.  The driveway to the new facility is under construction now with work to begin in earnest in 2025.  Construction will take about 6 months and is projected to wrap up in late summer 2025.
