Back-to-Back Deaths on Portland’s East Side
Tuesday, mid-morning, the Portland Police Department responded to a medical emergency at the Citgo gas station on Portland’s east side. A 50 year old Lyons man had entered the convenience store after pumping gas and collapsed on his way back to his vehicle. Portland Police officers were first on the scene and began CPR. Portland Ambulance arrived moments later and continued treatment. Despite best efforts, he had died suddenly of an apparent heart attack. The Portland man’s name is not being released at this time pending notification of the family.
Hours later, first responders were called to another death, just across the street at the American Heritage Inn. At the motel, a 47 year old Portland woman was found dead. The family has been notified, but the woman’s name is being withheld at this time pending the results of an autopsy. Portland Police Chief Star Thomas says that the death does not appear to be the result of criminal activity but is still under investigation.
“It’s the first time in 21 years as a police officer that I’ve had back to back deaths,” said Chief Thomas. Despite the physical proximity and closeness in time, Thomas says the deaths do not appear to have any connecting factors other than both being Portland locals. No further details on the two deceased were available at the time of publication.
