Ashley Bower Named April Student-Athlete of the Month
Ashley Bower, a junior at Portland High School, has been selected as the Portland Beacon and J-Dubb’s Signature Subs Student-Athlete of the month for April 2021.
Portland girls basketball coach Jason Haid told the Beacon, “Ashley competed at an elite level in the post-season for us. Defensively, she held several all-state guards to season lows, while leading us in scoring throughout the tournament. Ashley had big games in every championship game in the tournament. Belding (District Championship) 23 points, Frankenmuth (Regional Final) 26 points, and Newaygo (State Championship) 21 points.”
For the season, Ashley averaged 19.3 points per game, 4.4 rebounds per game, 2.2 assists per game, 2.8 steals per game, shot 77% on free throws, and shot 38% on three pointers. She passed the 1,000 career point mark during the 2021 season.
Bower is also a member of the Raider golf and soccer teams.
To be nominated for this award, a student-athlete must attend either Portland High School or St. Patrick School, and be a member of a varsity sports program or school-sponsored athletic club at his/her school. Nominations may be made by a member of their high school coaching staff, athletic director, principal, or a school recognized student government organization at his/her school. Nominations are also accepted from The Portland Beacon contributing writers.
The monthly winner is selected by a panel of Beacon contributors. The winner receives a free sub thanks to our sponsor, J-Dubb’s Signature Subs.
Monthly winners are entered into the student-athlete of the year contest. The winner for the year receives a party platter from J-Dubb’s Signature Subs.
