St. Patricks opens season with win over Webberville
The Shamrocks opened their 2020 season with a big win over rival Webberville, on Saturday, September 19th. The Shamrocks had a balanced offensive attack and beat the Spartans 40-18.
In the first quarter, Derec Fedewa opened up the scoring with a 34 yard rushing TD, making the score 6 to 0. Derec struck again after a long drive, scoring on a 5 yard rushing TD. Quarterback Connor Cross connected with Derec on the extra point, making the score 14 to 0. The Shamrocks closed out the first quarter with a 23 yard touchdown pass from Cross to Braxton Teachworth, making the score 20-0 after one quarter.
In the second quarter the Spartans showed some spunk, connecting on a few long passes and scoring on a 23 yard touchdown pass, leaving the score 20-6. The man of the night, Derec Fedewa, responded with a powerful 73 yard touchdown run, making the score 26-6. Seth Frawley caught a Cross pass for an 8 yard touchdown, making the score 32-6 at halftime.
The third quarter saw Derec Fedewa breaking free on another long run, with a 62 yard touchdown. Lucas Simon ran in the extra point, making the score 40-6 after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, Webberville scored two touchdowns, making the final score 40-18.
Offensive leaders for the Shamrocks were Derec Fedewa who had 14 carries for 208 yards and 3 touchdowns, and 1 reception for 34 yards and a touchdown. Connor Cross went 5 for 7 for 103 yards and 3 touchdowns. Peyton Russman also had 7 carries for 50 yards. Defensive leaders for St. Patrick were Brian Kwiecinski with 10 tackles 1 sack and 2 tackles for loss, Braxton Teachworth with 7 tackles, and Brice Cook with 3 tackles 2 sacks and 3 tackles for loss.
The game was also the debut of the 2020 Shamrock cheer squad. In a stunning development, 36 young ladies from St. Patrick's chose to cheer on their football team this year and signed up. Stacy Russman and Anne Bennett are coaches.
The Shamrocks play next Friday at Vestaburg at 7:00 pm.
