Aubree Martin Named February Student-Athlete of the Month

Aubree Martin, a senior on the varsity girls bowling team at Portland High School, has been chosen as the winner of the J-Dubbs Signature Subs/Portland Beacon Student-Athlete of the Month award for February 2020.

Martin was nominated by Portland coach Joe Whitford.

In his nomination of Martin, Whitford said that Aubree, “has been a huge asset to the Portland High School Girls bowling team and has earned the MVP award. In February, Aubree competed in the CAAC conference tournament. She walked away being the CAAC All-Conference Champion!!”

Whitford added, “In the MHSAA Regionals Tournament where there were 80 girls, she placed 7th which allows her to advance to the State Finals. Her run to become the Division 3 State Champion came up short. There were 60 girls (the best of the best in division 3) competing. They take the top 16 to move onto match play. She ended up in 14th place. She carried our high school team to become the CAAC League Champs. She also is an CAAC All-Conference team selection.””

To be nominated, a student athlete must attend either Portland High School or St. Patrick School, and be a member of a varsity sports program or school-sponsored athletic club at his/her school. Nominations may be made by a member of their high school coaching staff, athletic director, principal, or a school recognized student government organization at his/her school. Nominations are also accepted from The Portland Beacon contributing writers.

As the monthly winner for February, Martin will receive a free sub from J-Dubbs Signature Subs.

Monthly winners are entered into the student-athlete of the year contest. The winner for the year receives a party platter from J-Dubbs Signature Subs.

Other talented student-athletes receiving nominations this month were:

Ryan Lay – SPS Basketball

SPS coach Brett Pettit said, “Ryan is a part of Portland St. Pats varsity boys basketball team. He was voted as a captain by his teammates. Clearly, the season has not gone as we would have liked in regards to wins and losses. Ryan Lay has exuberated energy, and enthusiasm every single practice and game. There is not a single day where I have to question how hard Ryan played or practiced and I think that speaks volumes about his character. It could be really easy to quit and hang it up with a 1-17 record but Ryan continues to pour everything he has into each practice and game. Along with being a great kid with great character, Ryan averages almost 9 PPG and almost 9 RPG.”

Marian Pearson – SPS Bowling

SPS Athletic Director Patrick Russman said, “She qualified for the State Finals in Bowling placing 5th at the Regional. She is an outstanding person and would be deserving of the award.”

Assistant coach Jonda Schrauben added, “Marian is one of the hardest working athletes on the team. Always trying to improve her game.”
