Lady Shamrocks lose in District Finals to Fowler

The Friday, March 6th District final at Lansing Christian High School was billed as a grudge match, and the Fowler Eagles and St. Patrick Shamrocks didn't disappoint the fans. After four hard fought quarters of basketball, the Fowler Eagles won the district and advanced by a score of 42-34.

In the first quarter, the defenses for both team led to a very low scoring quarter. The Shamrocks held a 4-2 lead with 2:30 left in the quarter before the Eagles scored 5 points and took a 7-4 lead after one quarter. Mia Riley from Fowler hit a three pointer as time expired.

The second quarter was excellent basketball and had the fans rocking and rolling. Lydia Meredith opened for the Shamrocks, driving and completing a three point play. Katelyn Russell banked in a three, followed by back to back drives from Meredith and Russell. To end the half, Lydia Meredith came up with a rebound and flung the ball deep to a flying Sophie White to hit a layup with time expiring. The Shamrocks won the quarter 17-9, and took a 21-16 halftime lead.

To open the second half, the Eagles jumped out with a 5-0 run, and tied up the game. Fowler was able to win the quarter 10-2, and took a 26-23 lead going into the final quarter.

The final quarter was a game of attrition where whichever team was lucky enough to lead at the end was the winner, and Fowler got ahead 33-28 with 4:30 left in the game. This let the skillful Eagle guards play delay ball and hold on for the win. The Shamrocks played great defense, and had a few opportunities for steals, but the ball just wouldn't drop their way.

Offensive leaders for the Shamrocks were Lydia Meredith and Katelyn Russell with 9 points, and Samantha Teachworth had 8 points and 12 rebounds.

The Shamrocks finish their season 17-5.
