Charlotte Defeats Portland in Boys Basketball to Claim 5th Place in CAAC White

It was Senior Night at Portland High School. All nine graduating Seniors and their parents were recognized last night in a pre-game ceremony. Coach Jason Goerge also recognized his Seniors by starting two Seniors, who normally do not experience a lot of playing time, Ty Snitgen and Blake Meyers.

The Charlotte Orioles (4-14) came to Portland having won only one game in the CAAC White Division this year, an overtime victory at home against Portland. The Raiders (5-13) also entered the game with only one CAAC Victory this year, which was over Sexton on a buzzer beating tip-in. Last night’s game was essentially a battle to avoid last place. The winner would claim 5th place in the Conference and the loser would be the cellar dweller. Unfortunately for Raider fans, Charlotte controlled the game from the outset. The Orioles led at the end of the first quarter 12-8 and 30-19 at the Half.

The Orioles built their lead to 48-35 late in the fourth quarter. The Raiders connected on two last minute 3 pointers to bring the final score: Charlotte 48- Portland 41. The Orioles were led in scoring by Jeremy LaValley and Kyle Sandusky with 16 and 10 points respectively. Aryan Virk tallied 18 for the Raiders.

The Raiders conclude their regular season schedule next week with trips to Laingsburg and Mason. MHSAA Tournament play begins on March 11th when they will take on Eaton Rapids in the opening game of the Olivet District.
