Lady Raiders Stomp New Lothrop 48-13

On Tuesday night, the Lady Raider basketball team hosted the Hornets of New Lothrop. The Portland defense was dominant, holding the Hornets scoreless for the first 14 minutes and 14 seconds of the contest, and a total of only 13 points in the game.

Sophomore Ashley Bower led the Raiders with 15 points. Sophomore Alivia Densmore added 11 points, while sophomore Ava Guilford scored eight points. All eight Lady Raiders whole dressed for the game scored at least two points.

Junior Brooke Wenzlick led New Lothrop with seven points.

After the game, Portland head coach Jason Haid told the Beacon, “We talked about defending them as well as we could. They have a pretty special player, number 21 (Wenzlick). She just scored 42 points in a game last week. We knew we were going to have our hands full. We wanted to see what Ashley (Bower) could do on her to start, and she caused problems for her all night, and her teammates were there to back her up. Any time she tried to shot from the corner it seemed like there was another girl there waiting for her. That was really the key, we knew we had to slow her down.”

Haid added, “We knew we had to be sound offensively too, missing Breckyn Werner tonight. She has been out sick, so we had some girls step up. I thought Shalyn Dziewiatkowski did an excellent job stepping up and starting for her tonight. Shalyn rebounded the ball very well and played some good defense.”

Werner, a sophomore, has been a regular started for the team this season and has consistently be one of the team’s top performers.

Haid said, “I was pleased. It was another one of those team wins. We shared the ball well tonight. Ashley had 15, Densmore had 11, and Guilford had 8. We usually have three to four kids every game that are hovering right around the double-digit mark so that is just a sign of another great team win for us.”

Score summary by quarter:

1st – 2nd – 3rd – 4th – Final
