Lady Shamrocks Battle but Fall to Fowler 52-49

The St. Patrick’s girls basketball team hosted the Eagles of Fowler on Wednesday night. Both teams entered the game with 3-1 records.

The Lady Shamrocks jumped out to a 10-2 lead early in the first quarter, but the Eagles were able to tie the score at 12 at the end of the quarter.

The Fowler defense was able to hold St. Patrick to only five points in the second quarter and the Eagles went to the halftime break with a 24-17 lead.

The Shamrocks took to the court in the second half and were able to press the Eagles into some quick turnovers. Shamrock sophomore Lydia Meredith also had an explosive third quarter offensively, scoring nine points, and lowered the Eagle lead to only two points at the end of the third, 36-34.

The fourth quarter of the contest was full of hustle and grit by both teams. Players form both sides were diving for loose balls and forcing multiple jump ball situations. The scored was tied at 42, 45, and 49 points per side in the adrenaline filled final period.

With 33.6 seconds remaining in the game, Fowler led 52-49. The Lady Shamrocks had a few opportunities to score in the closing seconds of the contest, but the Eagles were able to hold for a 52-49 win.

Meredith lead the Shamrocks with 18 points and six steals. Sophomore Mara Schrauben added 12 points. Senior Samantha Teachworth has 11 points and 14 rebounds. Senior Ally Florian (2), sophomore Katelyn Russell (5), and junior Sophia White (1) also scored for the Shamrocks.

Sophomore Emma Halfmann lead Fowler with 17 points while freshman Emma Riley added 15 points.

After the game, Shamrock coach Al Schrauben said, “We played hard enough, we just didn’t play smart enough. Too many turnovers where we got lazy on passes that turned into lay-ups for them. Then offensively we stood around a little too much. When we got movement and got the ball to our post people where they could work, we were fine, but to many turnovers at bad times.”

The Shamrocks move to 3-2 on the season. They travel to Dansville on Friday night before entering their Christmas break.
