Lady Raider Volleyball Hosts Block Out Cancer

The Portland High School volleyball team hosted their Block Out Cancer event on Monday when they faced off against Eaton Rapids.

In the first match of the evening, the Greyhounds jumped out to an early lead won 25-17.

The Raiders rebounded in the second match. They quickly went up 13-6 and maintained the lead for the entire match. Despite a late charge by Eaton Rapids, the Raiders won the match 25-19.

The third match of the night saw numerous ties between the two teams at 2, 10, and 12, but the Greyhounds would eventually take the match 25-16.

The fourth match of the night ended up being the closest of the four matches. While Eaton Rapids at one time had a lead of 18-9, the Raiders were able to close the gap to 24-22, before the Greyhounds were able to finally get the win, 25-22.

The Raiders move to 12 wins, 13 losses and 5 ties on the season.

After the game, Portland coach Lindsey Barker said, “I am actually very happy with how we played tonight coming off an Ionia loss and a Lansing Catholic loss. We kind of had to regroup and talk about what we were going to do different for the last three, and even though we took the loss in four games, it was neck and neck. They worked really hard, it just came down to executing and they executed a little more than we did.”

When asked for her thoughts on the remainder of the season, Barker said, “We have a lot of goals we want to meet for the end of the year. We want to win some more games before we are done. Just staying up, staying positive and being consistent for the rest of the year, that is our goal right now.”

The Raiders travel to St. Louis on Saturday for the St. Louis Invitational. They then travel to Charlotte on Wednesday the 23rd before they host Sexton on Wednesday the 30th to close out the CAAC season. Their first-round district match-up will be against Sexton on November 4th at Lakewood.
