Portland Senior Julia Savage Excels on National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test

Portland High School Principal Christine Rockey has announced that Portland Senior Julia Savage has received a Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) in recognition of being one of the top 50,000 scorers of the more than 1.5million students who entered the 2018 SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Julia is the daughter of Phillip and Christine Savage of Portland. She is a four-year Honor Roll student and maintains a 4.0 GPA. Julia is a member of the National Honor Society and also plays varsity Tennis and Golf for the Raiders.

Julia plans to attend college in Michigan after graduation. “Maybe CMU or the University of Michigan”, she told the Beacon and intends to major in Mathematics.

Principal Rockey shared with the Beacon that the SAT/National Merit Scholarship test is voluntary and annually only about thirty Portland Juniors choose to take on the challenge of completing it. Only one or two Portland students receive NMSC Letters of Commendation each year.
