Owen Guilford Named Student-Athlete of the Year for 2018-2019
Owen Guilford, a 2019 graduate of Portland High School, has been named the Portland Beacon/J-Dubbs Signature Subs Student-Athlete of the Year for 2018-2019.
Guilford was a standout wrestler and football player for the Raiders. He finished his senior wrestling season with a perfect 48-0 record, and pinned his opponent in the state finals. He was the school’s first two-time state champion and he passed the elite 150 career win milestone in February.
The 5’ 7” 170-pound Guilford was also a linebacker and running back for the Raider football team. His senior football season was interrupted by a knee injury that required surgery and he was out for six regular season games. That being said, he still earned Free Press All-State and CAAC All Conference Honorable Mention.
Guilford recently decided to continue his wrestling career at Olivet College next year.
Guilford told the Beacon, “I am very thankful for all the hard work and support from my coaches and teammates, and the great support from the community.”
J-Dubbs Signature Subs of Portland partnered with The Portland Beacon to sponsor this award. The monthly winners received a free sub of his/her choice from J-Dubbs Signature Subs.
At the conclusion of the 2018-2019 school year, a three-person panel consisting of myself and Portland Beacon contributors Robert Lathers and Benjamin Rex Cross closely reviewed the accolades of all the monthly winners, and selected Guilford as the Student-Athlete of the year from this group.
As part of this honor, Guilford received a plaque and will receive a free party platter from J-Dubbs Signature Subs.
