The Portland High School Lady Raider basketball team’s season can to an end on Monday night in the opening round of district play. The Raiders fell to the district host Lakewood Vikings by a score of 52-49.

Portland led narrowly most of the game, with their biggest lead being just six points early in the second period, but the Vikings just would not go away quietly. Lakewood trailed by only three points at the end of the third, and with some clutch shooting in the fourth, took the victory away from the Raiders.

Lakewood Junior Olivia Lang led the Vikings with 22 points, eight of them coning in the fourth quarter.

The 2018-2019 Raiders end their season with a final record of 15-6. This was one of the programs most successful season in recent years. They finished second in the CAAC White division and started the season with a 10-1 record.

This Portland team was full of young talent with two freshman and three sophomores, and the program certainly has a bright future, but anyone present on Monday night could see the leadership of seniors Hannah Gruber, Lesley Barker, Cally Goodman and Jolee Pung. These four led this team all year long with their hustle and determination. Monday night was no exception as these four were often seen diving for loose balls and causing jump balls. The four led by example and never quit. They kept their team in contention tonight right up until the final play.

After the game, Portland Coach Jason Haid said of his seniors, “We will miss these four outstanding seniors. All four have given this program everything they have. They have launched this program in the right direction and will miss their hard work and dedication.”

Senior Calley Goodman and Freshman Ashley Bower lead the Raiders with 10 points each. Sophomore Breckyn Werner added 7, while Senior Lesley Barker added six points.

Score by quarter:

1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – Final

Portland 9 – 21 – 12 – 7 – 49

Lakewood 6 – 20 – 13 – 13 – 52

Lakewood moves on to play Lansing Catholic in the district semi-finals on Wednesday night.
