Costly Mistakes Doom the Shamrocks
Critical errors destroyed any hope for the Shamrock football team on Saturday, September 8th when they hosted the visiting Camden Frontier Redskins. The final score was 44-0 Redskins.
The Shamrocks started out well, forcing a Redskin punt in the first quarter, and began marching down the field, getting deep into Redskin territory when a high snap was fumbled by the Shamrock quarterback leading to 4th and 25. The next snap was also fumbled by the punter and the Redskins regained the ball on the Shamrock 33-yard line. After holding the Redskins, on 4th down a dropped defensive coverage lead to the first score of the evening, a 24-yard pass. The extra point was also good leaving the score 8-0 Camden Frontier.
More errors lead to another score in the 2nd quarter, as the Shamrocks again marched deep into Redskin territory before the Shamrocks coughed up the ball. This lead to a 22-yard rushing touchdown for the Redskins, the extra point failed leaving the score 14-0 at halftime.
After halftime, the Shamrocks came out and made a few things happen when lightning struck again with a great catch and run by a St. Pat’s receiver only to have the ball pop out when the receiver’s arm was grabbed. This took most of the air out of the Shamrock sails and led to 3 scores in the third quarter leaving the score 36-0 after three quarters.
In the final quarter, the Redskins threw in one more score on the Shamrocks, leaving the final score 44-0.
“This team was big, and they hit hard” said Coach Pat Russman. “We made some critical errors and couldn’t overcome being down early”. “I thought our boys gave everything they physically had, and I am proud of their effort. We have some things we need to work on and will make the necessary adjustments to get better as a football team.”.
Offensive leader was again Ned Smith who rushed 15 times for 113 yards. Tanner Lawson went 6 for 15 for 33 yards. Receiver Connor Cross had 2 catches for 27 yards.
Defensive leaders were Riley Kissane with 11 tackles, Alex Kissane with 8 tackles, Jeff Davlin with 7 tackles, and Zach Spitzley with 6 tackles and 1 tackle for loss.
The Shamrocks have their Homecoming next Friday, September 14th at 7 p.m. versus Webberville.
