Portland Varsity Boys Soccer Takes Down Fowlerville 3-2

Tuesday night on our home field, Portland beat Fowlerville on a penalty kick with 9 minutes left, winning 3-2. The game was a benefit for four-year-old Jace Petersen, of Portland, who was recently diagnosed with Leukodystrophy, a rare genetic disorder of the central nervous system for which there is no cure. All the proceeds from t-shirts sales, the bake sale, and concessions went to Jace’s family to help with the cost of medical expenses.

In the first half, #9 Florian Klindt scored two unanswered goals to make it 2-0. Fowlerville was a relentless opponent, and scored on a penalty kick to make it 2-1. In the second half, with Portland’s defense tiring, Fowlerville exploited a break in the center to tie it up 2-2. With the minutes ticking away, #6 Cameron Roof made a remarkable save on the goal to prevent Fowlerville from going up 3-2. With only 9 minutes left to spare, Portland Senior Tate Dziewiatkowski gave Portland a 3-2 lead with a crucial penalty kick.

Sophomore Cameron Roof said, “We were especially motivated to win for Jace.” The whole team was focused on playing for Jace. They continuously reminded one another to “remember what this is for.”

Portland goes to Olivet on Saturday to hopefully continue the winning streak. They are undefeated at 7-0.
