Portland’s Pier Competes in Division 3 State Championship

Portland High School varsity golfer sophomore Zach Pier was one of 107 golfers playing for the title of Individual State Champion in Division 3 this Friday and Saturday. As a freshman in 2017, Pier tied for third place in the state. Pier won the 2018 regional championship on May 30th with a 72 at Portland’s Willow Wood Golf Club.

On Friday, Pier played a solid eighteen-hole round on day one of the 2018 MHSAA LP Division 3 Boys Golf State Finals. Zach shot a two-over-par 74 on Michigan State University’s Forest Akers West Golf Course. At the end of the day he was four strokes behind Friday’s individual leader and in a three-way tie for second place.

On Saturday, Pier scored an 86, putting his two-day total to 160, and landing him just outside the top ten medaling golfers. Pier would end up finishing tied for 15th.

While his final placement was likely lower than what he had hoped for, I am confident that this fine young man’s best golf is still to come.
