Portland Wins Softball District
The Portland varsity softball team won the district championship at Alma Saturday by defeating Alma and Belding.
In game one the Raiders had to overcome a 4 – 0 deficit in the first inning to defeat the Panthers by the score of 10 – 7. Portland responded to Alma’s 4 runs with 4 of their own in the bottom of the first to get back in the game. Alma scored 2 more in the second and again Portland answered with 1 in the 4th to get within 1. Portland exploded with 5 runs in 6th to take a 10 – 6 lead on key hits by Abby Grys and Adrianna Novara. Alma scored one more in the seventh to end the scoring. Abby Grys went 3 for 4 with two doubles to lead the offense. Adrianna Novara and Abby Grys combined for the win in the game.
In the championship game Portland unleased its offense scoring 13 runs on 17 hits in the five-inning mercy shortened game. Adrianna Novara picked up the win in the 3 hit shutout performance. Adrianne also was the top hitter in the game, going 4 -4 with a home run, a double, and 5 RBI’s. Also pacing the offense was Natalie Linebaugh who went 3 – 4, Taylor Trieweiler went 2 for 4 with a double, a home run, and 3 RBI’s. Ella Gardner, Jada Walton and Abby Grys also had two hits each.
Portland will now travel to Belding next Saturday to take on Essexville Garber at 10:00 in the opening game of Regional competition.
