Raider Girls take Third at MSU Quad
The Portland High School girls tennis team traveled to MSU on Saturday to host an annual indoor quad.
North Muskegon took first with 16, Whitehall took second with 14, Portland took third with 13, and DeWitt finished in fourth with five. Raider coach Jim Niebling said, “We showed signs of growing pains and other signs of picking up right where we left off from last year. After losing three of our top singles and three of our top doubles players -- some of whom are the winningest players in program history -- we have some big shoes to fill. However, we return 5 players who made it to the semi-finals and finals at the State Tournament last year at lower flights. So it's not like the cupboard is bare! As a result, for some of our players their jump was quite large and their tournament was predictable. They took a few lumps. For others, their jump from last year was a natural progression and they performed, again, predictably. We're a young team. So it's going to take some time for us to gel and get back to what we expect for ourselves. We'll get there.”
