The Portland Raider girls basketball team hosted the Cougars of Lansing Catholic Friday night in a CAAC conference match up, and the Raiders struggled to cage the Cougars from the get go.
The Raiders offense got off to a slow start, scoring only two points in the first quarter. The early deficit ended up being too much to make up for, and the Raiders lost 42-27.
Score by quarter:
First Second Third Fourth Final
Cougars 16 11 8 7 42
Raiders 2 8 7 10 27
After the game, second year head coach Jason Haid said, “We can’t come into a game like this flat. I knew we would be coming out of Christmas break, we didn’t play in a holiday tournament, we had a few weeks off, and it showed tonight. I mean they beat us for every loose ball. They pushed the ball in transition a lot better than we did. They made lay ups and we didn’t. They hit free throws and we didn’t. I just thought our effort was not as good as it normally is, and with a young team we are going to have some ups and downs, and we just need to come back to practice on Monday and concentrate on putting forth a better effort against St Johns on Tuesday.”
The Raiders finished three of 16 from the free throw line.
Cally Goodman led the Raiders in scoring with 11 points, nine of which were from three pointers. Olivia Sandborn contributed eight points. Jolee Pung added three points, while Shelby Battley and Lesley Barker each had two, and Josie Goodman added one.
The Raiders next game is at St. Johns on Tuesday the January 9th. The Red Wings are five and two on the season.
The Raiders record is now one and five on the season.
