2017 Portland Beacon Giving Guide
The Portland Beacon is proud to present our inaugural Giving Guide. This guide is a detailed list of local non-profit organizations operating right here in our community. It includes a description of the organization, contact information for the group, and instructions on how you can make a charitable donation to the organization.
Some studies show that individuals often do up to 25% of their charitable giving between Thanksgiving and Christmas, which is why we want to get this guide out now. We hope for this guide to be an annual publication, and will do our best to publish a bit earlier in future years.
To be included in this guide, organizations had to be located in or have operations in Portland or neighboring communities. Organizations also had to be legally registered non-profit organization in the state of Michigan. While we appreciate that there are many very deserving regional, national and international charities, this guide is intended to focus only on local organizations.
Everyone’s financial situation is different. While there are several free guides available online covering year end giving, like Charity Navigator, Fidelity, and Liberty Tax Service, it may be advisable to discuss your charitable giving intentions with your financial professional.
If you should have any questions about one of the organizations listed, please contact that organization directly.

Brief description:
We are a non-profit, 501c3 organization dedicated to building a pavilion for the betterment and benefit of the City of Portland and the surrounding areas. While the pavilion has been done and turned over to the City in September 2015, we continue to be actively involved with its maintenance (we have volunteers who clean the bathrooms, plant flowers, sweep the floor, stain the wood, etc.) and continue to raise money to install temporary sides on the open bays to help with wind and inclement weather. We are also raising money for a boiler to operate the tubing that was put in the floor for an ice melt system at the time the pavilion was built.

Our big 4 events to make a difference: 1) Every October a coat drive is held. Each year 100s of people receive coats on our distribution day. 2) In 2017 our Annual Christmas Giving program provided a dinner, socks, hats, gloves to individuals and over 135 families with 320 children in the Portland School District. In addition, children received gifts and a shoebox filled with goodies. Residents of local nursing homes received personal care items. 3) When requested, assistance is provided to families in need due to fire or special circumstances. Funds are available for local emergencies. 4) Part of the mission of the Portland Community Fund is to provide grants to nonprofit organizations that serve those who live in the Portland School District.
