Abbie Hampton, a 2015 Portland High School graduate, has been honored as an Academic All-Big Ten Conference selection for 2017. Abbie is a junior coxswain on the Michigan State University Women’s Varsity Crew team.
Abbie has a 3.4 cumulative grade point average and is double majoring in Psychology and Criminal Justice, while minoring in Spanish.
After college, Abbie plans to work with juveniles in some way, likely in a detention center setting.
While at PHS, Abbie lettered twice on the varsity softball team.
Abbie’s mother Trisha Gudge Hampton said, “Abbie works hard at both school and on the Varsity Crew team. It takes time management along with complete dedication to both. Abbie loves MSU and is excelling in school and in the water. She has rowed at some pretty cool places including Princeton University. Her dad and I could not be more proud.”
Dad Gilbert “Gibby” Hampton and sister Alexandra also attended MSU.
For readers (like me) who may not know what a coxswain is, Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines it as “a sailor who has charge of a ship's boat and its crew and who usually steers” or “a steersman of a racing shell who usually directs the rowers”.
