PHS Athletic Hall of Fame to Induct Its 11th Class


The Portland Athletic Hall of Fame will induct its 11th Hall of Fame class on Saturday, September 30th at Willow Wood Golf Club. This years class include five (5) athletes; one (1) coach; one (1) honorary; and one (1) team. Each, as individuals or as a team, have contributed to many of the successes of our great Raider athletic history. They serve as an inspiration to past, present and future Raiders.

The members of the 2017 PHS Athletic Hall of Fame are:

Pat Dawdy (1970): Pat was an exceptional golfer and played 4 years of Varsity Golf. During those years, the team went 25 -1 in conference play and won the league championship all four years. His senior year he was conference medalist, regional medalist and was 2nd at the State Finals.

Travis Opperman (1998): Travis was an outstanding wrestler for PHS. He wrestled three years on the Varsity compiling a 123 wins against only 14 losses. He was a 2-time league champion; a 3-time member of the Lansing State Journal “Dream Team“; and a 2-time State Runner-up.

Rob Marvin (1999): Rob was an excellent athlete and excelled in both football and wrestling. He was a 2-way starter for the football team and was the leader in tackles both his junior and senior year. In wrestling he compiled a record of 110 wins and 31 losses. His senior year he had an outstanding record of 51-2. Rob placed 3rd at the State Finals his junior year and earned the title of State Champion his senior year.

Kate Doherty (1981): Kate earned 10 varsity letters at PHS in basketball, softball and volleyball. She was the volleyball team’s MVP her junior and senior year. In softball, she was a pitcher and shortstop who could hit home runs. As a 4-year varsity basketball player, Kate hold still hold several school records and was the League’s Most Valuable Player both her junior and senior year.

Sarah Johnson (2006): Sarah was a 2 sport athlete while at Portland High School. In basketball she was an outstanding defensive player and a strong leader. The Raiders won the league championship both her junior and senior years. In softball, Sarah was name to the 1st Team All-State three years. She still hold several PHS Softball records.

1973-74 Boys Basketball Team: This was one of the best basketball teams in PHS history. They had great team chemistry, played outstanding defense, could score points, and had good depth on the bench. They were League Champions and State District Champions compiling a 20 win - 4 loss season. They lost a heartbreaker in the State Regional when the go ahead basket was disallowed and the other team hit a half court shot just before the final buzzer. Members of the team coached by Don Crandall include: Randy Almy, Kevin Seal, Doug Gee, Chuck Peabody, Ken Lawless, Doug Kramer, George Carpenter, Phil Quinn, Jim Hall, Dan Lowery, Doug Miller and Tim Wellman.

Jack Anderson (Coach): Coach Anderson has coached for many years at PHS and has established his teams as winners. Coach Anderson coached football for 36 years and was a part of 9 conference championships and over 200 wins. He has coached softball for 38 going on 39 years. He is in the “Top Ten” for the most all time wins in the state of Michigan. His softball teams have won 23 league championships; 11 State District championships; and 3 State Regional championships. He was named District coach of the year 12 times and Regional Coach of the year 3 times. He is in both the Michigan Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the Michigan Softball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

David Hoort (Honorary): Former Judge David Hoort was selected as an Honorary Inductee for the Hall of Fame for what he has done for the athletic programs at PHS and their presence in the community. David was an athlete and leader as a student at PHS. Later in his life he used his love for sports and his leadership to “recreate” the boosters into the present Portland Athletic Association. His vision was to have an organization where all athletic programs work in conjunction with the PAA and to encourage all Raiders to support each other.

The 2017 PHS Athletic Hall of Fame class will be inducted at a dinner held in their honor at Willow Wood Golf Course, Saturday, September 30th. We thank each of them on behalf of Raiders everywhere for their combined contributions to the success and history of excellence in PHS athletics.
