The Portland Church of the Nazarene
Pastor Jimmy Guffey is lead pastor of the Portland Church of the Nazarene, a congregation that has been serving the Portland area for nearly 100 years.
Pastor Jimmy was graduated from Olivet Nazarene University with a master’s degree in youth ministry. There, he met his wife, Joy. They have four children.
“The most satisfying aspect of my ministry is working with people,” said Pastor Jimmy. “I feel joy not only in sharing the Word of God with others, but with sharing life,” he said.
Pastor Jimmy summarizes his church’s ministry by three simple words.
“We love, grow, and serve,” he said. “The idea that we have is to create an environment where people may come to love the Lord and His people; where they can grow in their relationship with the Lord and His people; and where they may serve God by serving others,” he said.
During the 2018 flood of the Grand River, the church served others by opening its doors to people who had been displaced by the flood.
“We had the privilege of offering the church building as a place for people to sleep,” said the pastor. “In the morning we served them breakfast. It was a supreme privilege for us to serve the community in this manner,” he said.
In addition to offering emergency aid during a time of crisis, the church regularly offers its playground, gymnasium, and kitchen to anyone who would like to use it for a small fee. The church twice opened up these facilities free of charge to the public after football games during the past autumn season, and it hopes to do so again next year.
Currently Pastor Jimmy would like everyone to know that the church is holding a candlelight service on Christmas Eve at 5 pm.
“Everyone is welcome to attend it,” said the pastor. “Our goal is to share the joy of Jesus with everyone. All are welcome.”
