Shamrocks fall on Gridiron
The Portland St. Patrick Shamrocks travelled to Fulton to take on the Pirates on Saturday, October 8th. The Pirates were playing in front of packed house and came to play, outscoring the Shamrocks 70-44.
In the first quarter, the bigger Pirates drove on the Shamrocks, outscoring them 3 touchdowns to 2 touchdowns in the first quarter. The Shamrocks scored when Lucas Simon caught a 54 yard touchdown pass from Freshmen Brady Leonard, and another scamper from Lucas Simon to leave the Shamrocks trailing after one quarter, 20-14.
The Pirates and Shamrocks traded a bit of back and forth, with the Pirates extending their lead in the second quarter, winning the quarter 22-14, and taking a 42-28 halftime lead. The Shamrocks scored hen Tyler Groothuis caught a 16 yard pass from Brady Leonard, and Lucas Simon returned a kickoff 65 yards.
The third quarter was all Fulton, with the Pirates shutting down the Shamrock offense, and scoring on all three drives, leaving the score 62-28 after three quarters.
The Shamrocks outscored the Pirates in the fourth quarter, on a 30 yard touchdown reception for Devin Cook, and a 65 yard reception for Lucas Simon.
Offensive leaders for the Shamrocks were Brady Leonard who went 6 for 13 for 228 yards and 4 touchdowns. Lucas Simon who had 15 carries for 177 yards and 1 touchdown and also had 2 receptions for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns. Brayden Simon had 5 carries for 49 yards, and 1 reception for 33 yards. Tyler Groothuis had 2 receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown.
Defensive leaders for the Shamrocks were Lucas Simon with 5 tackles and 7 assists, Riley Mosser with 5 tackles and 7 assists, Brayden Simon with 4 tackles and 11 assists, and Grant Pline with 2 tackles 10 assists 1 sack and 1 tackle for loss.
The Shamrocks next play against Morrice who is 6-1, on Friday, October 14th at Portland High School.
