Shamrocks beat Capital Homeschool Athletic Program
The CHAP Chariots visited Portland for a girls basketball game against the #1 ranked Portland St. Patrick Shamrocks on Tuesday, January 25th. The 13-3 Chariots have played a very tough schedule and came in determined to beat the Shamrocks. St. Patrick outlasted CHAP and won the game 52-43.
In the first quarter, Lydia Meredith, Natalee Teachworth and Mara Schrauben all scored 4 points, and Laynie Meredith chipped in a free throw, outscoring the Chariots 13-8. The Shamrocks full court pressure gave the Chariots difficulty, and good team offense kept St. Patrick ahead.
In the second quarter, more defense from the Shamrocks kept the hot shooting Chariots from taking a lead as Laynie Meredith badgered the CHAP ball handler all the way up the court. Laynie's one on one defense was stifling throughout the game, and led to multiple ten second turnovers as the CHAP ballhandler could not get it over half court in time. Lydia Meredith was hot at the line in this quarter, going 5 for 6 from the charity stripe and scoring 9. The Shamrocks outscored the Chariots in the second quarter, 15-13 and took a 28-21 halftime lead.
After the half, the Chariots figured out a way to exploit the Shamrock defensive weaknesses and outscored St. Patrick 14-9 in the quarter. Despite this, St. Patrick still maintained their lead after three quarters, being up 37-35. Lydia Meredith had 4 points, Katelyn Russell had 2 points, Mara Schrauben had 2 points, and Natalee Teachworth chipped in a free throw.
The fourth quarter was an exciting back and forth game, with the Chariots taking the lead early in the quarter, but the Shamrocks played solid team basketball. The Shamrock defense and rebounding was on point, holding CHAP to 8 points. Good ball handling kept the turnovers to a minimum, even in the face of an intense full court press from the Chariots. Mara Schrauben and Lydia Meredith both scored 5 points, Laynie Meredith scored 4 points, and Natalee Teachworth put in a free throw. The Shamrocks outscored CHAP 15-8 in the final quarter.
Offensive leaders for the Shamrocks were Lydia Meredith with 22 points 11 rebounds 7 steals 2 assists and 1 block, Mara Schrauben with 12 points 5 rebounds 2 steals and 1 block, and Natalee Teachworth with 9 points 1 rebounds and 2 steals. The Shamrock nation also celebrated Lydia Meredith on her 400th career steal, and establishing a new St. Patrick school record.
The Shamrocks next play on Thursday, January 27th at home versus Pewamo-Westphalia.
