Shamrock Softball defeats Holt, falls to Fowlerville in Greater Lansing Softball Classic

On Wednesday evening the Shamrocks traveled to Ranney Park to participate in the first round of the Greater Lansing Softball Classic against the Holt Rams. The Shamrocks defeated the Rams 6-3 in a fierce offensive battle.

The night was filled with energy, passion, and execution from both teams. The Rams took a lead in the second inning and added another run to make it a score of 3-0. The bottom of the third inning is where the Shamrocks put together their small ball and their power swings and scored lead off batter Rylee Scheurer. The Shamrocks added two more in the bottom of the fifth when Lydia Meredith hit a huge Home Run to score both her and Carly Scheurer who hit a single to be on. In the bottom of the sixth Emma Honsowitz added a solo home run and then after an intentional walk of Lydia Meredith, Mara Schrauben hit a screaming shot to score two more runs and that’s where the score stayed to end the game at 6-3.

Coach’s Comments:

What an absolutely electric evening! The girls battled each and every play defensively, and we’re offensive threats each inning to Lackman’s pitching. Rylee pitched 81 pitches and 51 were strikes leading to 4 strikeouts. Ry’s spins and locations kept a phenomenal hitting Holt team on their heals and allowed indirect contact so our defense could have her back. At the plate she went 3/3 and had 4 stolen bases. She was absolutely fantastic! Carly, Mara, Emma, Lydia all had hits that transferred into positions to score. Being able to execute the small ball- bunts, slaps, situational opportunities became runs. Pretty awesome to watch! Lydia and Mara closed down the left side- Mara with 2 assists and a PO, and Lu with 6 Assists and a PO. Addie behind the plate was as fierce as they come.

The focus and drive during this week has been my favorite part of the season! Not only getting invited into the GLSC as a tiny (under 100 students) high school, but then to compete with top Division teams only pays compliment to the girls and their efforts this season and their out of season work.

Coach’s comments: The Shamrocks turned around and played the Semi Final game of the GLSC this evening at Ranney Park.

The game was well attended, under the lights, and full of electricity! The Shamrocks fell to Fowlerville by a small 1 run deficit ending the game 4-5. Carly Scheurer pitched for the Shamrocks and had 5 strikeouts. She threw extremely well and led the team through all 7 innings. Lydia Meredith had a smashing homerun with 2 RBIs, Addie Scheurer went 2/4, Laynie Meredith had a double with an RBI, and Natalee Teachworth had a squeeze bunt with an RBI. These four runs were also accompanied by runners in scoring positions several innings and working their small ball and power hitting combinations to create uncertainty.

In the end we came up just short of a victory… but again, anytime a Division 4 school can put together a season that allows them the opportunity to compete, win, and shock the greater Lansing area and Division 1 and 2 teams- then that’s when we walk away with our heads high and shift to a tremendous focus on the weekend ahead.
