Raider Football earns Homecoming win over Eaton Rapids
On Friday night the Portland High School football team hosted the Greyhounds of Eaton Rapids for homecoming 2021.
The Red Raiders struck first with 10:24 remaining in the first quarter when senior quarterback Haden Getchell connected with senior receiver Andrew Maynard for a 55-yard touchdown pass. Senior kicker Madison Luxmore connected on the extra point giving Portland an early 7-0 lead.
The Raider defense would prove to be an extreme challenge for the Greyhounds all night, and they forced an ER punt. The Greyhounds had trouble with the punt and Portland recovered on the Greyhound 18.
The Raiders would reach the endzone soon after when junior running back Drew Miller ran it into the end zone for a three-yard touchdown. Luxmore’s point after gave Portland a 14-0 lead with 7:46 remaining in the first.
Portland would reach the endzone again when Miller sprinted for a 75-yard touchdown run with 1:37 remaining in the first. Luxmore’s point after pushed the score to 21-0.
In the second quarter of play Portland would score again when senior running back Trent Trierweiler ran it in from 15-yards out. Luxmore would connect again and the lead was extended to 28-0 with 8:43 remaining in the second quarter.
With 1:09 remaining in the second quarter the stingy Portland defense would pick up two points when the tackled the Greyhound quarterback in the endzone for a safety. Portland moved their lead to 30-0.
The score would remain 30-0 at halftime.
As the homecoming court was being announced at halftime, lightning was spotted in the area as the skies opened up. For safety purposes, the field was cleared and the halftime break was extended to allow 30 minutes for the weather to improve. The remaining homecoming festivities were moved into the PHS gym.
A light rain would continue to fall on an already saturated field and both teams would go scoreless in the third quarter of play.
With 10:37 remaining in the game Portland would pick up one more touchdown as Getchell connected with junior receiver Aiden Marowelli on a 32-yard touchdown pass. Luxmore would kick the extra point through the uprights and Portland would have a 37-0 lead.
Neither team would score again for the remainder of the game and Portland would earn a 37-0 CAAC White victory.
With the loss, Eaton Rapids moves to 0-7 overall, 0-5 in the CAAC White. They will play Leslie (3-4) next on October 15th.
