PHS Alum Inducted into Alma College Athletic Hall of Fame
On Saturday afternoon, Sarah (Lefke) Townsend was inducted to the Alma College Athletic Hall of Fame along with her 1999 softball teammates.
The Scots went 46-7 overall in 1999, and were a perfect 16-0 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association conference. They were NCAA Regional Champions, and made it to the NCAA Division III National Semi-Final game in Eau Claire, WI.
Townsend was one of three All-Americans and nine First-Team All-Conference players on the team. She played second base.
She was also a member of the 1998 softball team that was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2017.
Townsend, a 1995 PHS graduate, was a standout basketball and softball player for the Raiders. She is also a member of the PHS Hall of Fame.
After teaching and administrative positions at St. Mary’s (Westphalia), St. Patrick’s (Portland), Charlotte Upper Elementary and Ionia Middle School, Townsend returned to PHS this fall as a special education teacher.
After the induction ceremony, Townsend was able to watch her son Reese, a 2021 PHS graduate, play football for the Scots football team. The Scots defeated Anderson (IN) 51-2.
