Lady Shamrocks overwhelm Saranac
On Wednesday, December 15th, the Portland St. Patrick Shamrocks hosted the Saranac Redskins for a CMAC league match. Saranac played tough scrappy basketball, but the Shamrocks responded in force and beat the Redskins solidly with a score of 67-48.
In the first quarter, Sophomore Laynie Meredith reminded mid-michigan that there are two Meredith sisters, and the younger one is amazing as well. Laynie led the Shamrocks with 9 points, followed by a whole gang of Shamrocks as 7 players scored in the first quarter for St. Patrick. St. Patrick won the quarter 24-13.
In the second quarter, a solid team effort led by Katelyn Russell with 4 points and 6 other players again scoring, had the Shamrocks win the quarter 17-15, taking a 41-28 lead into halftime.
After the half, the seniors went off, with Lydia Meredith scoring 6, and Mara Schrauben scoring 4 and Katelyn Russell hitting a three. The Shamrocks advanced their lead, winning the quarter 13-10 and taking a 54-38 lead into the final quarter.
In the final quarter, the Shamrocks again had solid balanced scoring with buckets from 6 different players, led by Natalee Teachworth with 4 points.
Offensive leaders for the game were Lydia Meredith with 13 points 3 rebounds 11 steals and 4 assists, Laynie Meredith with 12 points 1 rebound 1 steal and 1 block, Katelyn Russell with 11 points 2 rebounds 3 steals 1 assist and 1 block, Mara Schrauben with 10 points 5 rebounds and 2 assists, and Natalee Teachworth with 8 points 8 rebounds 2 steals 1 assist and 1 block.
The Shamrocks host reigning State Champion Fowler on Friday in Portland for a grudge match between two of the best teams in Division 4.
