Lady Shamrocks defeat Fowler Eagles
On Friday, December 17th, the Fowler Eagles visited Portland for a huge game against the Portland St. Patrick Shamrocks. This game was picked to be a big one, as the Eagles are the reigning State Champions, and the Shamrocks were their closest competitor in Division 4 last year. This game it was all green, as the Shamrocks led from start to finish and won the game, 53-49.
In the first quarter, Katelyn Russell put on a shooting clinic for the Eagles, going three for three from long range and hitting another jumper for 11 points. Coupled with solid team scoring, the Shamrock defense smothered the Eagles, only allowing 9 points in a 19-9 first quarter.
The second quarter was more intensity from the Shamrocks as they held the Riley sisters to only one point in the quarter, and won the quarter 11-8. Katelyn Russell continued her dominance by leading the Shamrocks with 5 points. This left the game at 30-17 at halftime.
The Shamrocks continued to battle after the half, when the Eagles came out with a ton of energy but St. Patrick was able to keep with them. The Eagles outscored the Shamrocks 11-10. Lydia Meredith led the Shamrocks with 5 points. The Shamrocks led 40-28 going into the fourth quarter.
The final quarter was action packed from start to finish, as the Eagles showed just how good they can be, winning the quarter 21-13. Despite going 6 for 18 from the free throw line, the Shamrocks fought mightily for the entire quarter and were able to outlast the Eagles. The Shamrocks were led by Mara Schrauben with 7 points.
Offensive leaders for the Shamrocks were Katelyn Russell who had 19 points 3 rebounds 2 blocks, Lydia Meredith had 12 points 7 rebounds 4 assists and 3 steals, and Mara Schrauben had 12 points 8 rebounds 1 steal and 1 assist.
The Shamrocks have the Christmas break off, and will visit Morrice on Monday, January 3rd at 7:30 for their next game.
