Lady Raiders improve to 10-1 with key win over Haslett


The Portland High School girls basketball team had their second big time contest of the week on Thursday night when they hosted Haslett (9-1). The division one Viking entered the game top ranked in the CAAC Blue division.


The high-quality defenses of both squads made quality scoring opportunities hard to come by, and Haslett had a 29 – 25 lead at the end of three quarters of play.


In the fourth quarter the Raiders were able to outscore Haslett 15-5, and secured a key 40-34 victory.


Offensively Portland was led by senior Ashley Bower who scored 18 points. Senior Breckyn Werner added 10 points for the Raiders, while senior Ava Guilford added eight points including two clutch three-pointers in the fourth quarter.


Haslett was led by junior Maddie Fant who scored 13 points.


Scoring summary by quarter:

1st – 2nd – 3rd – 4th – Final

Portland 8 – 6 – 11 – 15 – 40

Haslett 7 – 12 – 10 – 5 – 34


Portland improves to 10-1 on the season. They have their third and final contest of the week on Friday night when they travel to Charlotte. The Orioles are currently 7-4 overall and 1-4 in the CAAC White division.
