Lady Raider basketball season ends in quarterfinals

The Portland High School girls basketball team’s season came to an end on Tuesday night when the Lady Raiders fell to Detroit Edison 53-35 in the MHSAA Division 2 quarterfinals at Williamston High School.

The explosive Edison offense was averaging more than 68 points a game coming into the quarterfinal match-up. Portland was able to hold them to 53 points, but it was not enough for the Raiders to advance in post season play.

Edison was led by senior Madisen Wardell who scored 22 points and senior Ruby Whitehorn who scored nine points.

The Raider offense was led by senior Ashley Bower with 15 points. Seniors Ava Guilford and Breckyn Werner added six points each. Senor Alivia Densmore added five points and sophomore Malia Thelen added three points.

Scoring summary by quarter:

1st – 2nd – 3rd – 4th – Final

Portland 12 – 1 – 9 – 13 – 35

Detroit Edison 17 – 9 – 15 – 12 – 53

Edison advances to face Ludington in the semifinals at MSU’s Breslin center on Friday.

Portland ends its season with an overall record of 23 and two. The Lady Raiders were also 2022 CAAC White, District and Regional champions.

You can see Portland Head Coach Jason Haid’s post game comments in the video below.

Personally, I have been able to witness all but a handful of games for this Portland squad in the last two seasons. This senior class has been something special to watch and they will be remembered for years to come.

The community support they received this season was also quite impressive. That was evident in the huge crowd on hand Tuesday night at Williamston… especially the roughly 200 Portland fans that waited in the gym until well after the game to cheer for each player as they returned from the locker room.
