On Saturday morning, emergency vehicles blocked off the main parking lot at Portland Middle School to assist emergency crews with an accident. Responders brought in an Aero Med helicopter for assistance.

A vehicle traveling on I-96 left the road way and landed on the embankment between the highway and the middle school.

Crews had the area clear around 9:00 AM. Portland fire and police, Ionia County Sheriff’s office, and Reed and Hoppes towing also assisted with the situation.

A spectator waiting for a Junior Raider football game shared this video of the helicopter leaving the scene.

According to Spectrum Health, “Aero Med provides scene flight services, inter-hospital transport services, and specialty services such as neonatal transports, intra-aortic balloon pump, left ventricular assist device transports and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) transports.
