Drew Miller Named January Student-Athlete of the Month
Drew Miller, a senior on the Portland High School wrestling team, has been selected as the Portland Beacon and J-Dubb’s Signature Subs Student-Athlete of the month for January 2023.
In his nomination of Miller, Portland head coach Andy Pulling said, “Drew is a senior team captain of the PHS Wrestling Team with a record of 36-4 on the season and 134-46 in his career imprinting his name in the prestigious "Century Club" in the Portland Wrestling Program. This season Drew has become the Ionia County Champion, Mike Adamson Invite Champion, Comstock Invite Champion, Shepherd Invite Champion and Shepherd Invite Most Outstanding Wrestler.”
Pulling added, “Drew has accomplished all of this while maintaining a 3.97 GPA, being a 1st Team All-State running back and holding memberships in Captain's Club and National Honor Society.”
Miller was also a member of the PHS football team last fall and had a stand-out senior season receiving several accolades.
To be nominated for this award, a student-athlete must attend either Portland High School or St. Patrick School, and be a member of a varsity sports program or school-sponsored athletic club at his/her school. Nominations may be made by a member of their high school coaching staff, athletic director, principal, or a school recognized student government organization at his/her school. Nominations are also accepted from The Portland Beacon contributing writers.
The monthly winner is selected by a panel of Beacon contributors. The winner receives a free sub thanks to our sponsor, J-Dubb’s Signature Subs.
Monthly winners are entered into the student-athlete of the year contest. The winner for the year receives a party platter from J-Dubb’s Signature Subs.

Coach Madison Schrauben said, “I would like to nominate Alaina Forest for athlete of the month. She is on the St. Pats varsity bowling team. She is a great team leader and always keeps a level head even when not preforming her best. She has one of our highest averages on our team.”
