Portland Early College Program continues to grow

September 11, 2020

A program at Portland High School continues to gain popularity in its third year of existence. The Portland Early College Program offers students the opportunity to earn their high school diploma and up to 60 transferable college credits and/or an associates degree at no cost to the families.

Additionally, students in the program are offered extra support in order to build college readiness skills they need to be successful beyond high school.

Jason Haid, Post Secondary Coordinator at Portland High School told the Beacon, “There are several goals we hope to achieve in carrying out this program. We would like to see an increase in Portland High School students attending college, increase the amount of success our students have in higher education, and ease the financial burden of college costs to families”.

The Portland Early College Program is open to all Portland High School students. Students must join the program before October of their 11th grade year to be eligible. All students in the program will stay on for a 5th year of high school, but will be enrolled in primarily college courses in their 5th year.

Currently, there are 110 students in grades 9-12 who are taking advantage of this amazing opportunity at Portland High School. If you would like more information on how to enroll your student in the program, contact Jason Haid at jhaid@portlandk12.org or 517-647-2981
