Portland/Haslett Tennis Scores

Portland played their first duel match of the season Thursday night at Haslett. The end result wasn't what the Raiders were looking for. However, they played a lot of good matches and showed they had what it takes to play with a top team that is in a higher division. PHS Coach Joel Cross said, "I was really impressed with how three of the matches played out. Alex Russman is playing singles for the first time this year and managed to take his match to 4 and 3 against a very good player. Alex is so athletic that he is really able to hit balls that most players would just give up on. 2 and 3 doubles were also really impressive. They both managed to push Haslett to a 3rd set. The doubles teams really seem to be learning how to take control of a point. It's great to see them poaching balls at the net and making their opponents work to win points."

Portland Classic Tennis Scores

Portland hosted their 4th tournament in two weeks on Saturday. Cross said, "This may have been the closest tournament we've played so far. All of the teams were very evenly matched. 15 of the 48 matches played on the day went to three sets. Unfortunately, Portland didn't get enough of those matches and ended up in 4th place. Parma Western and Big Rapids are both solid division 3 teams and it's great to know that we can play close to even with them. Whitehall is a division 4 team, like us, that qualifies for the state tournament almost every year. Even though we didn't finish where we wanted to, I'm very happy with how we played today. 2 doubles has finished 2nd in every tourney so far this year and they finally managed to claim the top spot. We also asked Gage Rodriguez to step in for Dane Wildrom at 4 doubles. That's a tough thing to do. 4 doubles didn't win any matches today, but they did show that I can count on some other guys to fill in if I need them."

Cross added, "Next week we will be adding Yannis Maurer to the line up. He's an exchange student from Germany that has been playing tennis for quite a while. The whole team is excited to see if he can help add to our line up. We'll find out when we host Williamston on Tuesday."
