Cozette Brown named J-Dubbs/Portland Beacon Student-Athlete of the Year

Cozette Brown has been chosen by the Portland Beacon as the J-Dubbs Student-Athlete of the Year. As a freshmen, Cozie set personal records in seven of her 14 races, including setting the school record twice. She finished 11th in the CMAC, good for 2nd team all-conference, which was the best finish in St. Patrick school history. Cozie was also the first female runner in St. Patrick school history to earn the right to run at the state cross country meet, where she surpassed her seed position by 20 places and ran her 3rd fastest race, and the 3rd fastest time in school history, which also beat the school record.

Her coach, Dan Lawless, was thrilled that Cozette won the award. "Cozie is very much a team oriented runner, she is encouraging to her teammates and is always vocal during team prayer. Cozie worked extremely hard this past fall in cross country. When we had extra workouts, she always took advantage of the opportunity to put in work."

Cozettes parents had plenty of good things to say about Coach Lawless as well. "Coach Lawless is amazing. Having an engineering background, he is observant, analytical, and purposeful in his approach to coaching. He identifies realistic goals for each student at the start of the season. For Cozette, he set the expectation that she would break the school record. Upon meeting that goal by mid-season, they set the next goal and then the next. He is patient, kind, and understanding. We are very fortunate to have him on the SPS coaching staff and working with our daughter." Cozies mom also added, "Cozette has been amazing us ever since she was very little with her maturity, calm demeanor, faith, focus and positive attitude. Knowing she has these qualities, we are not surprised she has become a champion, amazed and proud, but not surprised. We love her and appreciate all that she gives towards meeting her personal goals and representing our supportive community."

As a side note, Cozette is a girls name meaning, "people of victory". This is a family name, that came from her mothers side of the family, from Cozettes great, great aunt. An alternative meaning of Cosette is "Little thing". Both of those translations seem to be profoundly appropriate.

Cozette had a phenomenal Freshmen year.
