Multiple fire departments battled Thursday house fire on Academy Street

On Thursday afternoon, the Portland Area Fire Authority responded to a structure fire on Academy Street near the intersection with Lincoln Street. The Ionia Department of Public Safety, the Lyons-Muir Fire Department, the Berlin-Orange and Pewamo Fire Departments also provided assistance.

The two-story home appears to be a complete loss. No injuries were reported.

According to VFW Post 4090 in Portland, the home belongs to long time VFW member John Fryover.

In a Facebook post from Thursday evening, the VFW said, “While we are glad that everyone was able to get out safely, there was significant damage to the home. Several people have offered to generously donate to help offset some of the cost from this fire, but were unsure of how to do so. With this in mind, the VFW would like to coordinate the donation effort for John. We will ensure all donated funds are give(n) directly to him... no third-party company and no percentage loss.”
