School Operating Millage Renewal Passed

According to unofficial results posted on the Ionia County Clerk's website, the Portland Public Schools Operating Millage Renewal Proposal has passed with 76% of voters voting yes on the proposal.

The image below is from a posting on the Ionia County site as of 6:00 PM on March 11th.

In an email sent to parents earlier this week, Portland Superintendent William Heath said, "Every four years Portland Public Schools asks voters to renew a non-homestead tax levy. The money generated from this tax levy makes up a portion of the per pupil funding that the district receives from the State of Michigan. Our per pupil funding makes up the majority of our operating budget. On Tuesday, March 10th, voters in Portland Public School District will be asked to vote for a 4 year renewal of the non-homestead tax levy. This 18 mill operating tax levy generates over $1.4 million each year for the district and is only assessed on non-homestead property such as industrial, commercial, businesses, rental, and second homes. This is a renewal of our current tax levy on those properties and therefore taxes on those properties will stay the same. This millage does not apply to principal residence homeowners."
