The Portland Police Department was dispatched, at 10:30 PM on Sunday night, to a Portland city residence on the report of a disorderly person. Officer Jason Smith arrived at residence and subsequently requested back-up from the Ionia Co. Sheriff’s Department and the Michigan State Police. The officers encountered a Lapeer County man who was visiting the home.

Officers then learned that the man had allegedly assaulted a pregnant female, who was also at the home, prior to officers arriving. Alcohol and other drugs are suspected to have been involved prior to law enforcement arrival.

A decision was made to arrest the man, who forcefully resisted the officers. In the process of the arrest the man is reported to have assaulted the Ionia County Deputy. The man was successfully restrained and is currently lodged at the Ionia County Jail. His name is not being released pending arraignment in District Court.

The injured Deputy is reported to have been treated and released at the hospital. The Deputy’s name has not yet been released to the public. Additional charges may be brought against the man pending Ionia County Prosecutor review.

The Portland Beacon will report additional details as they become available.
